Psychology as a profession includes numerous areas of specialization: Biological psychology- this specialization seeks to discover the relationship between biological processes and behavior like how does the intake of alcohol or nicotine influence behavior?; Experimental psychology- the term experimental is a misnomer because psychologists in other areas also carry out experiments. Experimental psychologists are usually behaviorist and cognitive psychologists who use experimental methods to study how people react to sensory stimuli, perceive the world, learn and remember, reason and respond emotionally. Developmental psychology- concerns itself with human development and the factors that shape behavior from birth to death. Social psychology is interested in the ways interactions with other people influence attitudes and behavior. They are concerned with the behavior of groups and are well known to the general public for their work in public opinion surveys and in market research. Personality psychologists focus on differences between individuals. They are interested in ways of classifying people for practical purposes, as well as studying each individual’s unique qualities. A great number of practitioners are in the field of clinical and counseling psychology. They are engaged in the application of psychological principles to the diagnosis and treatment of emotional and behavioral problems mental illness, drug addiction, mental retardation, marital and family conflicts and other less serious adjustment problems. |
